Title
Davy Lopes Pool Collaborative Mural
Description
In January 2022, The City of Providence Department of Art, Culture and
Tourism (ACT), Department of Public Property, and Department of
Recreation invited RI-based muralists to an open call. Six artists would be
chosen by an Art Selection Panel and the Art in City Life Commission to
participate in a workshop with guest artists Amber Art and Design, from
Philadelphia, PA that would yield a collaborative mural celebrating the
re-opening of the Davey Lopes Rec Center pool.
In April 2022, six awarded finalists, Tamara Diaz, Michael Ezzell, Angela
Gonzalez (AGONZA), Nora Rabins, Joel Rosario Tapia (TAPIA), and Ysanel
Torres (YSANEL), joined Linda Fernandez and Keir Johnston of Amber Art
to create this approximately 48’x 8’ larger installation.
Each artist painted one of six smaller murals that comprise the larger work.
They were created on parachute cloth in the Davey Lopes boxing gym
during a time when many creatives in Providence were coming out of
lockdown following the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. Working with
Davey Lopes sta and youth, who shared words describing their rec center
community - including strength, play, love, care, unity, courage, pride,
connection, safety, and celebration - the artists not only connected with
each other and the Davey Lopes family, they also learned from Fernandez
and Johnston, experts in the parachute cloth technique used here.
