Title
Under the Cobblestones, The Beach
Description
“Under The Cobblestones, The Beach,” is a series of handmade tile murals by Chroma Council artists Quinn Corey and Linsey Wallace. The murals are located on the edge of Memorial Park on the Providence River and offer depictions of the rich biodiversity and habitat that the river contained under Indigenous stewardship, prior to colonization of the area by European settlers. As the city grew and Industrialization took hold the river was paved over and hidden for generations, furthering the adverse effects on the environment. The title of the piece references the paving over of the river while also calling to mind the revolutionary call to artistic action of reclaiming and reshaping our public spaces that was put forth by the avant-garde artist group the Situationist International via the protest slogan from May ’68 “Sous les pavés, plage!” The murals ask that we learn from the past and take action to ensure a healthier future.
