Title

Where Long Pond Used To Be

Description

Until the late 1800s, Long Pond was right here. People collected lilies, some napped beneath willow trees and after a hard freeze up to 2000 people would ice skate on it at the same time. It was used for swimming and bathing, fishing and sailing, as well as baptisms. The Perkins Sheet Metal Co. reportedly used 100 gallons of Long Pond water a minute, and tons of ice was harvested from it every winter. Towards the end it became a dumping ground, filling in what is now Dexter and Bucklin Streets. Long Pond was filled completely around 1905.
