Title
Welcome To Mount Hope
Description
Community members thought the artwork should welcome people to the neighborhood. This large-scale graphic lettering will be a gateway to Mount Hope for people traveling up Cypress Street. This lettering style was developed in response to community feedback on the originally proposed graffiti-style lettering. During community engagement sessions, participants conceptualized artwork that extended the natural elements of the park across the bridge. The large flowers of this design honor Billy Taylor through their symbolism; the Black-eyed Susans representing justice, encouragement and motivation, and the violet representing the school children that chose it to be the RI state flower. The aim was for something more “whimsical, happy and joyful” that also covers more of the span of the bridge. Overhead medallions decorate the pedestrian entrances to the bridge at the Abbot Street and Billy Taylor Park entrances. These directional markers support neighborhood connectivity and place identity.
